Mattie Irons was a character I played at Forest of Doors for several years before retiring and joining staff. A goblin from a Dickensian, subterranean steampunk city, Mattie was a tinker and inventor. During the course of my time as a player, I created a number of different costumes for the character, only a few of which are represented here.

The first costume was Mattie's summer costume and consists of a pair of gray velvet short pants, a white cotton blouse with a subtle pinstripe, and a blue/copper silk taffeta vest. The vest is lined with contrasting copper/green taffeta and is technically reversible, though I don't believe I ever wore it the opposite way. It closes with hammered brass buttons.

The second costume pictured was Mattie's winter gear. The blouse and pants were purchased, as was the hat and WWII goggles. Everything else was made from scratch. The tool bandoleer is made from a re-purposed purse and brown leather straps. The tools are held on with black elastic tabs and there is a large brown pouch on one hip which is hidden by the coat.

The vest and coat were made from the same brown faux suede fused with fleece and were both very warm. The vest is fully lined in bright green plaid flannel and buttons with stamped brass buttons. The coat is lined with bright green satin lining material and sports hammered brass buttons. The sleeves unbutton all the way to the elbow to allow more manual dexterity of the hands and wrists.

The final outfit was made as a mock up for The Countess, and was created using Truly Victorian's Dinner Bodice pattern and my own skirt pattern. The bodice is gray twill decorated with black velvet trim. The skirt is made of black cotton velvet, and is adjustable in length and drape, thanks to the incorporation of tapes.
